If you love watching Zombies getting killed, this is your movie. It gets straight to business with zombies everywhere.
This movie is a very serious movie in which the hero crash lands off the coast of Africa and into the middle of the zombie apocalypse. I was a little disappointed that they didn't go into the history with news flashes here and there or any real explanation of what happened, but I guess considering where the story takes place, it would probably be unrealistic.
This movie made me think quite a bit about how to protect yourself if you are stuck out in the open with zombies wandering all over the place. It made me consider weapon choices, food, water, where to sleep, and can you even stop moving for a brief moment since zombies don't sleep.
Our hero is in the military and seems to have enough survival experience to get by, but he also learns some as he goes. In a similar situation, I imagine we would also learn as we go, or we would be zombie fodder. It is also helpful that he is an engineer and is familiar with what he needs to do to make things work. He also uses his brains, probably more than anything else. Probably the most important tool you can have.
If you are in an area that you are not familiar with, it helps to make friends with someone who is familiar with the area. Staying moving is also easier if you have a buddy with you if you can so you can alternate sleep while the other is driving. Sleeping in the trees out of sight of the zombies is also effective in this scenario.
Overall, I thought the movie was very interesting. Not your typical zombie movie with a bunch of people with minimal survival skills who get picked off one by one, but people who practice their survival knowledge through the whole movie. This movie also doesn't have a lot of drama or even much dialog. If you like gore, this movie does it right. Realistic looking gore effects. Realistic amounts of blood and body parts. It is not lacking in suspense either. The plot and story are a little bit weak because of the scenario but I still liked it.
I will be generous and give this movie a 7 for story, a 8 for effects, and an 8 for lessons in survival. I found it to be a nice twist to the zombie movie genre.
