The whole premise of this movie is, as implied by the title, a story of a man who has strange dreams and visions about the end of the world and decides to build a better storm shelter. He seems to be doing well, but gets obsessed with the project and causes issues with his friends, his family, and his work who all assume that his lack of focus on them is just him being irresponsible and going crazy. So he builds his shelter and then the movie ends with a surprise that I am obliged not to spoil. It isn't too much of a surprise, but it is not exactly what I expected either.
I am not sure if I should rate this movie a 6 of 10 or an 8 in 10. I am left trying to understand what it was that I just saw, but I find myself really not wanting to see it again so I would probably just give it a 7 for the whole making me wonder what in the world just happened. But on the other hand, it is interesting if you like this sort of a movie. It is pretty original. I would say it was worth watching once.
What about his prepping skills? I would say that they were lacking to say the least. You never knew where he got his advice, but he did seem to understand that an underground shelter would be a safe place for at least a short term with the potential for several days or weeks. He fills it with food, assuming that he will be there for a while and then proceeds to put rather shallow ventilation in the top of his bunker so it could be breached easily. If you are concerned about zombies or crazy people you need to plan for at least a second exit. If they know you are in there, they may just wait you out. If they are smart, they will be able to smoke you out or whatever. If you are concerned about flooding, shallow vents are not a good idea. A bunker like this is primarily for tornadoes and storage for supplies only.
Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Go to work, spend time with your friends and family, but prepare for the worst.

Now that you have sucessfully made it out of your house and to your car, you race down the street watching obvlious neighbors being eaten. You're coming to a fork in the road. If you go to the right, it will take you to your boyfriends house... Left, the interstate... At the last second you swerve to the left, running over your old chemistry high school teacher. You never liked her anyway, besides, she was probably a zombie, right.......
Once you get onto the interstate you realize that you weren't the only one with the idea to get out of the city. Traffic is backed up for as far as you can see, people driving on the shoulders (very badly). So now is time for a new plan... Walking.
You're about to leave car. What should you take? You frantically look through your trunk... You're suddenly wishing you wouldn't have cleaned it out yesterday, because a gronola bar would come in handy right about now. *stomach growls*. So, you grab the first thing you see - a tire iron. That will be useful for zombie head smacks ;)
You start to eye your backpack full of your college text books, and think, hmm... maybe I have a gronola bar in there. Frantically, you dump out all your books... Much to your dismay, there was only a crumbled up bag of chips and a melted chocolate bar. "Guess those will work," you say. You swing the now empty bag over your shoulder and abandon your car.
Where are the zombies you wonder to yourself. Suddenly, you hear screaming from ahead. You look to see zombies all running towards you, eating people along the way. You have to get off the interstate. Just as you're about to run, you feel a cold hand on your shoulder.
This is it, you think. I am going to die.
Look for part 3 COMING SOON!

I have assembled a list of things that you will need to address if you plan on surviving the soon to come doomsday. This list applies to basic survival for the long term. I have not touched on how to make clothes, how to cook your food, or how you might plan on brushing your teeth for example. My goal here is to keep you alive for the long term. Be sure to comment after you read this with your thoughts and advise.

NASA recently wrote an article entitled NASA - 2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won't End? in which they attempt to ease the minds of those who claim that 2012 is the year of the end of the world as indicated on the Mayan calendar. Many people accept all these answers and comments without doing any research of their own. NASA selected a series of questions that were submitted from somewhere and posted their answers. This is my response to their statements.
NASA: Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.
MY RESPONSE: I guess this all depends on what your definition of "bad" is. There are possibilities of solar flares hitting the earth, asteroid collisions, volcanoes, super volcanoes, huge earthquakes, tsunamis, and other potentially catastrophic events that can happen with little or no warning. Flat out saying nothing bad will happen in 2012 is just a roll of the dice. There is always the possibility that something bad will happen at any time.
NASA: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.
MY RESPONSE: So apparently a lady by the name of Nancy Lieder who is communicated with by gray aliens called Zetas via a communication device put in her brain knows otherwise. I suppose it is up to us to decide if we believe her or not. If she is correct then we are in deep trouble because we are headed for a Nibiru cataclysm. (Reference Nibiru cataclysm - Wikipedia)
NASA: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.
MY RESPONSE: NASA is correct. December 21, 2012 is the beginning of the 14th baktun (20 cycles of their long count calendar). Unless there is something to this date that we don't yet understand.
NASA: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.
MY RESPONSE: This is also correct. These alignments would only effect us if they were long term which just doesn't happen. At least as far as we know.
NASANibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Eris is real, but it is a dwarf planet similar to Pluto that will remain in the outer solar system; the closest it can come to Earth is about 4 billion miles.
MY RESPONSE: This might be correct, but we read in the news all the time about objects that seems to have been missed and are discovered only a short time before they pass us.
NASA: A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-switch to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. A magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia, anyway.
MY RESPONSE: A magnetic reversal does not mean a rotation reversal. These things do not affect each other. Some scientists believe that a magnetic reversal happens around every 50,000 years or so as a normal cycle of the earth. It is not likely that it will have any effect on the earth. As for rotation, it is believed that Uranus, which rotates on its side, did not always rotate that way. Perhaps some large object collided with it and turned it on its sideways axis. Perhaps Pluto whose orbit crosses close to Uranus, or one of the billions of planets that apparently fly aimlessly through our galaxy and universe.
NASA: The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA NEO Program Office website, so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012.
MY RESPONSE: Do you really believe that they have found every object that will be coming close to earth? Here are just a few articles of asteroids that have flown past earth with very little notice in the last few years. http://news.discovery.com/space/asteroid-2011-md-near-miss-monday-110624.html, http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,503164,00.html, and http://blogs.nature.com/news/2010/09/short_notice_for_asteroids_nea.html are the first three I found since 2009.
NASA: For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and for all the fictional assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, we cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.
MY RESPONSE: This is true. There is no absolute proof that doomsday will happen. But on the other hand, can you really rule it out? The fact is they have no proof that it will not happen.
NASA: Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years. Near these activity peaks, solar flares can cause some interruption of satellite communications, although engineers are learning how to build electronics that are protected against most solar storms. But there is no special risk associated with 2012. The next solar maximum will occur in the 2012-2014 time frame and is predicted to be an average solar cycle, no different than previous cycles throughout history.
MY RESPONSE: This might not be true at all. Many experts have said that a solar flare can cause an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that can cause all kinds of electrical disturbances from damage to satellites, disruptions to communications, up to catastrophic failure or our power grid causing decades to rebuild to total failure of everything that uses electricity. This would include computers, cars, your house, everything. Even your solar panels and wind generators would fail. (Reference http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_flare)
I know NASA has good intentions to try to ease our minds. The last thing we all need is a massive panic and martial law. I would say that there is not a lot you could do in any of these situations that you should be doing to prepare anyway. Storing food, keeping self protection handy, and having something useful or valuable for trade, and so on. Always be ready.

So why do people seem so fascinated with the zombie scenario. While zombies may be one of the oldest doomsday scenarios we talk about, global EMP, financial apocalypse, super volcanoes, asteroid impacts, and global pandemics seem far more likely.
The truth is that the zombie apocalypse is a great place to start for your survival planning. Seriously... You might as well. In any doomsday scenario you will do much better if you plan for zombies. Why? Because you know that you need food and water. You know that you may need to provide your own protection. You also know that you need a support network.
In zombie movies, what do they always do? They look for food, they get guns to protect themselves, and they look for a safe place to stay and pick up some useful allies at the same time.
Nobody really knows exactly what to expect in any doomsday event, or exactly which one will happen. If your plan is for zombies you should have your bases covered.

I have played many hours on this quite entertaining game. I wanted to point out some facts from the perspective of a survivalist.
There is very little that can be applied to an actual zombie apocalypse. You can't use plants to hurl things. Corn and butter or even watermelons have a zero effect on zombies. Plants simply do not grow that fast. There are pretty much no weapons in this game that could even slow down a zombie even briefly.
The only thing that could possibly be considered useful would be fortifying your home and staying where it is safe.
Overall I found this to be a very fun game. Even after finishing it, I still played it more. I rate this game 4 of 5 stars for fun and 1 of 5 stars for practical advice. Have fun!

Where are we now? There are many countries now in the world who are using various types of currency that are basically based on nothing more than debt. The more we owe, the better the worlds banks are because they are the ones who print and control this money. This is where consumer confidence comes in to play. The more confident you are in the financial system, the more comfortable you are and the more likely you are to borrow money to buy things.
Now the banks print more money whenever they feel like they need it, but that makes the value of the money they have already printed worth less. This works out great for governments because they can pay off their debts with money that is worth less than it was when they borrowed it. This means that they are basically paying off their debts for less that what the original debt is worth.
One problem with all of this is that everyone has to borrow more and more money to make this whole system work. This is obviously not sustainable. http://www.usdebtclock.org/ at the time I wrote this shows the federal government is now over $15.6 trillion dollars in debt and the average family in the US owed over $600,000! How is this sustainable in the long run? There will come a point where this whole farcical system will break.
The fact is, it is already showing signs of failing. If you read the news, there are many countries that do not owe anywhere close to the amount of money that the United States does, but they are nearing default, or are listed as basically in default. Look at the financial situation of Greece, Portugal, Italy, and China to name a few. Do some research and see for yourself.
There are several countries using the Euro that are in desperate need of rescue right now. This is putting the Euro itself in jeopardy. There have been many predictions recently that have claimed that this currency is close to failing. This is so alarming that many nations are throwing money at this problem to try to avert catastrophe. The problem is, China’s economy is based on cheating, and the dollar itself is getting weaker. What you could buy for one dollar today would cost you around 3 cents 100 years ago.
I am not saying that there will be a global financial collapse tomorrow, or in a month, in a year, or even ten years. Signs are pointing to bad consequences of the way we run our monetary system. What I am saying is that you should be ready. Stock food and supplies that you might not be able to buy if your dollar is suddenly worth nothing and make sure that you have something of value to trade with. History shows that precious metals like gold and silver have held their value through the ages. Consider these.
