Some of us have wished for it and some dreaded it, but there’s no doubt that at some point in time we have all thought about what we’d do in a post-apocalyptic world. Where we would go, how we would survive, what we would do if we were left with only our skills and wit to see us through the end of the world. Regardless of anything else, it’s a guarantee that people with basic survival skills and instincts will be the ones that outlast all of us. Here are a few skills that can help you not only after the apocalypse, but can be beneficial in everyday life as well.
First AidThe very first skill that you should ever consider learning more about is first aid. The real-world uses and implications are quite obvious, and the advantages to having first aid knowledge in a post-apocalyptic wasteland are invaluable. Instead of being able to call an ambulance or take a quick trip to the doctor, you’re going to be on your own and able to count only on yourself. If you don’t have any medical experience, even the smallest cut or sprain can mean your undoing.
HuntingEveryone has to eat, and when the local grocery store has been raided by the other survivors lucky enough to get to it, you’re going to need to put food in your belly that doesn’t come from a can. Being able to hunt, when the hunter’s skills are sufficient and the prey plentiful, can allow a person to never have to worry about not putting food on the table again. Some of the hunting skills you should focus on are weapon use, tracking abilities and trapping for smaller prey.
Shelter BuildingWhether you decide to take shelter in a pre-existing structure or you head into the wilderness to start anew on your own, everyone should know the rudimentary aspects of building a shelter. Even if you do find a cozy building to rest in, you never know when you’ll have to evacuate it. Familiarize yourself with how to build basic tents, lean-tos and teepees, that way you can be confident you’ll have something over your head no matter what.
Mechanical Familiarityhave some understanding of mechanics and mechanical repair. Making sure that your mechanical proficiency is high is imperative for your survival. Great, you found yourself a vehicle and some fuel, but it’s useless if it breaks down and you can’t repair it. A gas-powered generator can be a lifesaver, but it’s just an oversized paperweight when you aren’t able to keep it repaired. Having skills like this will be a difference maker in the long run as there won't be an auto shop you can go to for an easy fix.
Equipment PrioritizationThere’s a great chance that you’ll find yourself constantly on the move after the apocalypse, whether you’re looking for greener pastures, running from bandits or just don’t like staying in one place too long. Because you’ll be moving a lot, and since you can never count on always having a vehicle, having the ability to prioritize your equipment is important. Be able to calculate the amount of food and water you’ll need for a given time period and weed out the luxuries from the essentials in your equipment. Having a lighter load to carry will save you both energy and time when you have to bug out.
Everyone can have a shot at inheriting the earth and flourishing in a post-apocalyptic environment. What it will always come down to is your ability to survive when the modern comforts of life are gone, and brushing up on these five skills in one way to give yourself an advantage over the competition.
