Off brand lighters are cheap enough to have lots of them scattered about so it's easy to always have one at hand – but matches are the thing I have in the bag as a backup.

Usually just a lighter and paper, but I much prefer flint and steel and a bit of meths (that's british for methylated spirit, not methamphetamine) 🙂 soaked cotton wool. you get a sense of achievement doing it that way.

My favorite is Vaseline soaked cotton balls. Works like a charm.

It will taste disgusting is an understatement. I would also look for gas at farms… lots of vehicles and equipment use gas and lots round here have their own tanks.
