Summer is the ideal time for enjoying family fun, but many of our favorite summer activities expose us and our children to certain safety risks that just aren’t as common in the winter. Before you gather up your family and head off to the park, picnic grounds, or beach, take time to read and reflect on the following summer safety tips that all moms need to know.
In the Hot Sun, Cars Are a Safety Hazard
During the heat of the day, get your kids out of the car first. Cargo and groceries can wait. On hot summer days, temperatures inside your car can rise quickly making your car interior feel like an oven. Even with the windows partially rolled down, kids can quickly succumb to heat stroke. Simply leaving your air conditioner on is not an option. Your auto’s air conditioning systems won’t work if your car should stall out.
Children and Water Safety
Children up to the age of 14 are highly vulnerable to accidental death by drowning, and in fact, this is the second leading cause of death for young children. In the absence of swimming lessons, parents need to be certain their kids are supervised at all times when near the water. Pools represent an attractive hazard for neighborhood children who wander onto your property when you are not home.
Bug Bites and Poisonous Plants
Those summer activities that bring us the most joy like, camping, hiking, and eating outdoors, seem to expose us to the most painful and bothersome threats. Bug bites, bee stings, and poisonous plants have a way of bringing about an instant end to our outdoor celebrations. Before going outdoors, take the time to study up on what poisonous plants look like in their natural surroundings so you can learn to avoid them. Bees are attracted to flowering plants so avoid floral scented fragrances when you go out and exercise care when leaving open containers of sweet beverages around. If someone gets stung, brush the stinger away with a plastic knife, and rub a wet aspirin on the skin. Apply ice to the area to reduce any inflammation. When you are back home, use a topical hydrocortisone ointment to stop the itch and promote healing.
Insist on Bike Helmets
According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, falls while biking, skating, and similar activities are the most likely cause of childhood injury. For this reason, your priority should be to reduce or eliminate altogether the risk of head injuries. You can do this by insisting that your children wear a properly-fitting helmet anytime they are on wheels.
The sound of that final school bell ringing is the unofficial start of summer. After a long year inside the classroom, kids can’t wait to run outside where freedom, fresh air, and skinned knees wait for them. Summer activities are an indispensable part of childhood memories, but your family’s summer fun should involve the least amount of exposure to hazards you can get away with. By taking reasonable precautions and paying heed to the above-mentioned safety tips, your kids will get through this summer with nothing more than a few scrapes and bruises.
