Fresh water is an important commodity, but it is absolutely necessary to include in any emergency supply stockpile. In fact, it is the first thing that should be addressed when building a safety reserve and there are 5 reasons why.
During an emergency, water supplies can be cut of or contaminated. Therefore, it is extremely important to ensure you have plenty available for each person to drink for an extended period of time. At least have enough stashed for a few days, maybe more if you are in a disaster prone area.
Another issue that becomes important during emergencies is that any pets that may be part of the household will, also, need drinking water. Though they don’t need as much as humans, they will need there own reserve as well. And if there are any dirt or cuts concerning the pet, it’s important to have a reserve for tending these issues.
When cooking during an emergency event, many foods may be canned or dried and need water to cook or rehydrate for consumption. Keep enough for daily food preparation; as much as a gallon per day for several days.
For cleaning dishes and food containers, water will be needed for washing. This water should be heated to boiling then allowed to cool enough to the touch for regular washing, but if fear of contamination is suspected, then place the item in a pot of boiling water to completely destroy any germs.
Hygiene is important to avoid disease and illness. Storing enough water to bathe, not conventionally in a tub or shower, but with a washcloth and soap is prudent. Remember that each person needs clean water after each washing. Do not reuse dirty water for the next person’s use. It can, however, be classified as gray water and can be used for other reasons such as sanitation.
This is something many people overlook when preparing for an emergency. City or town water supplies may be cut off causing no water for toilet flushing. Calgary drain cleaning may be necessary if your house starts to get backed up. Keeping a supply specifically for this purpose is necessary for sanitation and keeping healthy living areas.
