Going through day-to-day life, no one really expects to be threatened, robbed or attacked. Unfortunately, though, these things happen to normal people just like you every single day. When that happens, being equipped to defend yourself may make all the difference in how the situation is resolved. Here are four essential steps you need to take to adequately arm yourself so that you’re ready when it really matters.
Find a Weapon that Fits You
Choosing a gun that is right for you is considerably more complicated than you might expect. Among the factors that need to be taken into account are the size and shape of your hands, the overall size of your body and whether or not a given gun can be concealed on your person given the clothes you normally wear. Look around and see how different firearms feel in your hand. You want something that you can shoot comfortably, even under pressure. If you need help, ask the salespeople at your local gun store, who are usually both very knowledgeable and very willing to help you pick.
Put in Range Time
One of the biggest mistakes people make when equipping themselves for personal defense is buying a gun and then stopping there. Simply owning a gun isn’t much good if you can’t fire it quickly and accurately, even in a tense situation. Be sure to take it out to the range frequently to practice shooting and hone your marksmanship skills.
Get Your Concealed Carry Permit
Once you have bought a gun and become proficient in using it, you’re prepared to defend your home in the event of a home invasion. To defend yourself outside of your home, though, you’ll need to get a concealed carry permit from your state. Certain companies, like Phelan Gun Range, realize that this permit will allow you to carry your gun on your person outside of your home. Every state will has slightly different rules governing the carrying of firearms, so be sure you know what the law is where you live.
Learn Some Form of Hand-to-hand Combat
Learning to properly defend yourself with a gun is a great way to prepare yourself for self-defense situations, but you also need to be able to rely on yourself in the event you don’t have access to a weapon. For this reason, it’s important that you get at least some rudimentary training in some kind of unarmed combat. Martial arts, such as karate and taekwondo, are excellent options. If you live in a larger city, you may even be able to find a school that teaches Krav Maga, a modern mixed martial art developed by the Israeli special forces.
These essential steps will leave you prepared and equipped to defend yourself in almost any situation. Remember above all to prepare yourself in such a way that you’ll be able to keep a cool head if you are attacked. If you do, your chances of emerging unharmed are substantially greater.
