Mountain House Breakfast Bucket Review

by Shane White

Mountain House asked me to review their new Breakfast Assortment Bucket, and considering how pleased I was with their products in the past, I immediately said yes.

By popular demand, Mountain House recently decided to make a freeze dried food bucket that included only breakfast items. In their bucket, they include (4) Granola with Milk and Blueberries, (4) Scrambled Eggs with Ham and Red & Green Peppers, (4) Scrambled Eggs with Bacon, and (4) Breakfast Skillets. I have tried them all and they all taste excellent. One nice touch is that all of these products I tried you can prepare and eat right out of the pouch as well. Also the packaging is very solid and has a zip seal on the package as well.

  • Granola with Milk and Blueberries

Before I say anything else about the Granola…This is the only item in the lot that you do not add boiling water to. Read the directions carefully. This one takes cold water and makes an excellent tasting granola cereal with blueberries.

I have always and always been a fan of granola cereal and this did not disappoint me in the least. One nice thing about this one is it is also the easiest to prepare. Just remove the oxygen absorber, add around a half a cup of cold water into the pouch and it is ready to eat. It tastes great as well. It has plenty of real blueberries and lots of great tasting granola. It was not a chore sampling this product. One interesting note about this is that is turns very purple from the blueberries.

One pouch has 2 servings with 260 calories per serving an 8 grams of protein. That is 520 calories and 16 grams of protein per pouch.

  • Scrambled Eggs with Ham and Red & Green Peppers

The Scrambled eggs with ham and peppers was also very easy to prepare. Simply boil a cup of water, pour into the pouch, stir well, zip the top and in around 5-6 minutes it is ready to eat. It has quite a bit of ham and peppers in it. They were very generous with them as is typical with all the Mountain House products that I have tried. This product tasted excellent and rehydrated well. There was a little water left, but I didn’t find this to be a problem.

One pouch has 2 servings with 180 calories per serving an 16 grams of protein. That is 360 calories and 32 grams of protein per pouch.

  • Scrambled Eggs with Bacon

I have tried this one before and I still feel the same about it as before. This product tasted great and has a lots of bacon pieces in it. Preparation is the same as the Scrambled Eggs with Ham. This one also had a little water left each time I made it, but I don’t really see this as an issue.

One pouch has 2 servings with 210 calories per serving an 17 grams of protein. That is 420 calories and 34 grams of protein per pouch.

  • Breakfast Skillet

This one was my favorite. It was loaded with hash browns, scrambled eggs, pork sausage, peppers, and onions. They suggest that you serve this on a tortilla (not provided) but in my opinion, it tasted awesome without it. I did try one in a tortilla with cheese and salsa and that was delicious as well.

This one did seem to absorb all the water when I cooked it.

One pouch has 2 servings with 360 calories per serving an 14 grams of protein. That is 720 calories and 28 grams of protein per pouch.

If you are a vegetarian, this is not the product for you. There is LOTS of REAL MEAT in the Breakfast Bucket.

Just a bonus note for all Freeze dried foods. When you start to prepare them, they are completely free of moisture so in my experience, the prepare times are good, but I find the consistency is much better if you give them a few more minutes to fully rehydrate. This is not just a Mountain House suggestion, but I have found this with pretty much every freeze dried food I have eaten. Just keep this in mind when you prepare your meals.

With Mountain House, you will be looking forward to the next disaster just so you can eat it.
