You don’t really need to live in a disaster area to be prepared for the unforeseen. Earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and the albeit unlikely bacteriological/viral threat are all still out there, potentially waiting to happen. Some situations require you to be prepared with a great backup plan and survival kit that keeps you on your toes and ready to go, so you need to focus on preparing such a kit just in case. Although an end of the world scenario is likely, but not necessarily looming over the horizon, you would need to be ready for more than just power outages and water shortages. Creating a good food bank of sorts for such disasters is an absolute must if you want to be ready. The following tips will give you an idea how you can prepare for it:
- Picking the right location is the first thing you have to consider, since it will largely dictate what you can do with the rations. You must pick a dark and cool place for this purpose, such as your cellar or basement, as it will get the job done well. You must make sure you have secure shelving units and pallets to get it done. Additional cupboards will also be needed if you have the space as well. Do remember that you really don’t have to put all your eggs in one basket, since some items will have a longer expiration date and sturdiness than others.
- Pick a good, balanced diet for your supplies, since the human body will need different sustenance to survive extended periods of time. A balanced and diverse diet is necessary for survival, since not sticking to one can lead to health issues or even scurvy. Eyesight issues, skin diseases, infections, heart and organ failure can all happen due to vitamin and mineral deficiency, so our bodies must receive those through our food supply. You need balanced rations containing grains, cooking oil, legumes, honey, spices, salt and maybe even powdered milk and sugar.
- Water storage is another thing you have to pay attention to, since the need for uncontaminated drinking water during an emergency will be high. Human beings may be able to survive for weeks without food if need be, but without water you only have a couple of short days before your body starts shutting down. Never underestimate your supply and keep it fresh, looking for long-term storage solution and replacement no matter how calm things look at this moment in time.
- Military rations are an excellent solution to your long-term storage issues. They are meant to survive the apocalypse in most cases, so they will last a long time. Although you won’t really enjoy their taste that much, they will save you when it counts so this makes them a prime choice for such a food cache. The greatest thing about them is that they are compact and lightweight enough to be carried around during reconnaissance. US-made MRE packs have been around for a long while now, so if you live in the US or have access to surplus MRE packs, then you might want to go for it. The greatest thing about them is that you may also have a much easier time moving if the need arises, as they can be packed with ease in compact bundles or boxes.
