When it comes to being prepared, nothing ranks more importantly than supplies. But not just any supplies will do, having the right ones can help keep you fed, healthy, and in control in an unforeseen disaster. Whether or not you believe in a zombie apocalypse, it is important to keep safety items on hand – even if the undead never show up, the one to really look out for is Mother Nature.
The best way to keep items ready is by creating a universal supply area – one that can be accessed easily, even in the event of dangerous weather. (It doesn’t have to be in your house, just so long as the whole family knows where to head in an emergency. A garage or outside-access basement will work fine as well.) Next, make a list of items to keep on hand – ones that you can’t live without, including water bottles (pack iodine or a water purifier to save on space and weight), snacks (choose ones that won’t go bad), a first-aid kit, dry socks, and a radio (preferably a two-way). Other necessary items may include a jacket, medication, and personal hygiene items, such as a toothbrush or bar of soap.
One of the biggest misconceptions about survival packs (or bug-out bags) is that they are a free-for-all. Packers include in anything and everything they can think of. However, loading on unnecessary items only adds dead weight. And, in survival mode, being mobile is a must.
Overall, the best solution is to weigh items before packing them – by way of benefits and literal weight. For instance, a toothbrush will take up very little space and weight, while blankets (although they will be warm) will take up more than their fair share. Opt for a heat wrap instead as a compromise.
When packing your bug-out bag, remember that only the necessities are allowed. After all, you’ll be the one carrying it. Decide what matters most before planning ahead, and you can ensure to have the most efficient survival pack possible.
